A Community
of Angels was the largest and most popular art exhibit ever staged in
the City of Los Angeles along with being the largest manifestation of
angels in physical form in history. Originated by the Volunteers of America
to benefit their numerous youth programs, the project brought hundreds
of angel statues painted by emerging and established artists to the streets
and plazas of this culturally diverse metropolis in the spring of 2001
and the Summer of 2002. I was privileged to be its official photographer.
Two books
that I coauthored with Marnie Tenden and Hannah Kaufman, which present
all the angels and the inspiration behind their creation are available
at bookstores and on the Community of Angels website, acommunityofangels.com.
I am honored to say that the 2001 book was on the Los Angeles Time’s
Best Seller List for three weeks.
What I share
with you here are a few of my favorite images of the angels and events.
It is not possible to present them all, for they are too numerous. Photographing
this project, each angel, and meeting so many special people who created
or sponsored angels has truly been one of the most remarkable and rewarding
activities of my life. May we remember and honor the sacred in each other
always.
